QURANIC STORY

The Prophet ﷺ's Year of Sadness

Explore the Prophet ﷺ's Year of Sadness, a trial of loss in Surah Ad-Duha (93:1-3).

📖 Surah Ad-Duha (93:1-3)

In the tenth year of prophethood, the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ faced immense grief known as the Year of Sadness. His beloved wife, Khadijah (RA), who had been his steadfast supporter and the first to embrace Islam, passed away after a prolonged illness. Shortly after, his uncle Abu Talib, who protected him from the Quraysh's persecution despite not converting, also died. These losses left the Prophet ﷺ vulnerable and heartbroken amid rising hostility in Makkah.

Amid this sorrow, Allah SWT revealed Surah Ad-Duha to console His Messenger ﷺ, assuring him that He had not forsaken him. The verses reminded the Prophet ﷺ of past mercies, like his orphanhood and guidance, promising relief after hardship. This divine comfort strengthened his resolve, leading to the miraculous Night Journey soon after.
