1917 – 1980 · Mujawwad (slow, ornate classical recitation)
Sheikh Mahmoud Khalil Al-Husary (rahimahullah) is widely regarded as the finest tajweed reciter of the modern era. Born in Egypt in 1917 and appointed Egypt's chief Quran reciter, his recordings from 1959-1971 are treated as the gold standard of mujawwad recitation across all schools of qira'at. His pronunciation is precisely correct, his tempo deliberate and unhurried, and his voice carries a quality of solemn reverence that makes his recitation widely used in Islamic education and broadcast around the world.
Each recitation below is set against beautiful footage of mosques around the world — Mecca, Madinah, Al-Aqsa, Blue Mosque, Sheikh Zayed and more. Click any to watch on YouTube.
